Balers are available in multiple sizes but primarily are divided into two categories: round balers and square balers. Each type of baler has its pros and cons and can each be suitable for different operations. Square Balers

Square Balers create square bales that range from about 14x18 to 16x18 inches in size. These bales are optimal for transport and handling since they can be easily stacked on top of one another. Their high density is also great for storage. Square bales can also be quicker to produce due to their nonstop operation, however, they require more horsepower and more effort to maintain. One drawback of square bales is they are more prone to moisture absorption in cases of bad weather. This can ultimately take a toll on the quality of the hay. Also, if you are looking for a large square baler they can be quite more expensive.

Round Balers

Round balers produce cylinder bales ranging from 4x4 to 5x6 feet. These balers are more common in hay operations since they can be less expensive and easier to obtain. Round bales have a much higher volume than square bales, which means they will be less affected by wet hay if bad weather strikes. Although round bales might take a bit longer to produce due to their stop-and-start operation, the balers require fewer moving parts, which means less maintenance and less horsepower required. The primary disadvantage of using a round baler is round bales are more challenging to transport since they are less stable and difficult to stack. Also, their high volume takes up much more space which can limit the amount of storage space for the bales.
